Useful Moving & Storage Tips

It is a well-known fact that moving house is one of the most stressful events you will ever undertake.
However by following some practical guidelines you can go along way to removing allot of that stress. Below are some practical tips, which we have gathered through observation, first hand experience and 30 years in the business....

De-clutter

Once you have a move date and the house sale is complete, start thinking about all the items you and your family have gathered over the years, which you no longer need.  This is the perfect opportunity to get rid of any worn-out furniture, old or broken toys, clothes and other odd'n'ends. Contact charity shops like Oxfam, Enable Ireland & Saint Vincent de Paul about taking some of your old items.

Remember the less volume you have to move the lower the removal cost!!

Packing

One of the most common mistakes made in moving house is packing of household contents being left until the last minute. Don’t start packing a few days before the move date; try to start pack at least two weeks beforehand. Items such as books, CD's / DVD's, out-of-season clothes and kids toys can be packed long before the removal van arrives.

Clearly mark/label boxes (on at least 2 sides) with the contents and the room that the box should be left in at the new address.

Put aside at least one key box for essential items needed in the first few hours and days of arriving at the new house. i.e. Kettle, medicines, essential documents, food & toiletries.

Contact List

Make a list of all the  companies and numbers you will need to contact in the days leading up to and days after your move. Including solicitors, Banks and mortgage companies, telephone, ESB/Gas, telephone company & Satellite/Cable company.

Childern / Pets

Make arrangements to have your childern and/or any pets to be minded on the day of the move.

Essential Items

In our experience it is possible for critical items to be packed in the removal van only for the customer to require these before lorry is unpacked at new house location. Put aside a pack with absoultlly essintial items, such as car keys, house keys (old and new) and any critical documents you may need on house removal date. Put this pack in a secure place where it cannot be packed in the van by accident.
